How to prepare cacao drinks

The trick to a delicious cacao drink is to blend the cacao paste with hot water into a frothy drink. You can also use oat/nut milk and endless spice blends. Here are some favorite recipes:


Cacao Drink

Cacao 15-20gr
optional spices
hot water / oat milk ±200ml

  • 70°C is hot enough to melt the cacao well.

  • Use a milk frother or (hand)blender to create foam as a final touch.


Cacao Shot

Cacao 15gr
hot water 125ml

  • Play with the cacao-water ratio for your favorite thickness.

  • Chili increases/activates the effects of cacao.



Cacao 15gr
hot water 75ml
foamed oat milk

  • Let the cacao dissolve for 15sec in the hot water and stir before pouring the foamed milk.

  • Delicious with cardamom.

Tips & tricks

  • Delicious things to add: cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, vanilla, anise, nutmeg and all your tasty imagination.

  • Chili gives a nice kick and increases the effect of cacao.

  • If pure cacao is a bit too intense for you, add some honey, agave or cane sugar to sweeten it up. Also oat milk is delicious to make it more creamy and is naturally sweeter.

  • Maca powder gives a nutty/milky taste and an energy boost. It Also it increases your libido ;-).

  • The Mayas and Aztecs used to pour cacao drinks from vase to vase until foam appeared or used a molinillo (whisker). A frothy cacao drink has the best mouth feel and rainbow colored bubbles make the perfect serve.

  • Cacao drinks give focus, stimulate creativity and a nice flow. A nice alternative for coffee.

  • Combine a cacao drink with herbs, supplements or smart drugs that you are using. Cacao helps your body to uptake these as a carrier because of the natural fats in cacao and increase of your blood circulation.

  • Find out what dose works best for you. Some people are simply more sensitive than others. In general we recommend 10-25gr as a casual dose and 30-42gr as a ceremonial dose.

  • Cacao has a subtle effect, some notice it directly, others after a week. You’ll get the most benefits from cacao by using it regularly, but feel what feels right for you.

  • Drink enough water as cacao is slightly dehydrating to avoid a potential headache. In general, always drink enough water ;-).
