How to prepare cacao drinks

Cacao drinks are made for thousands of years and are really easy and quick. You need 20~30gr cacao paste, 150~250ml water (or nut milk) and optional spices.

  1. Dissolve cacao paste in hot water and blend or stir. 50-70°C is warm enough to melt the cacao. Cut into small pieces to dissolve easier. Use about 20 gr per cup for a casual dose or 30 gr for a stronger dose in 150~250ml water or nut milk.

  2. Optionally add cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, cardamon, vanilla, anise, nutmeg, honey or other spices to create your favourite drink. Chili gives a delicious kick and increases the effect of cacao. Maca powder gives a nutty/milky taste to your drink and energy throughout the day. Some say it also increases your libido ;-).

Special frothy touch: use a blender, mixer or whisker to dissolve the cacao even better, this creates a frothy drink. The Nahuatl, Maya and Aztecs used to pour cacao drinks from vase to vase until foam appeared or used a molinillo (whisker).

If you use fresh ingredients like turmeric, ginger and anise seeds, first grate or cut into small pieces to make a tea, strain it to avoid chunks and dissolve the cacao paste in the end.

Pure cacao drinks give focus for work and stimulate creativity. A nice alternative for coffee.

There are many more delicious uses. Add cacao shavings to your breakfast with yogurt, fruits, nuts, oatmeal or smoothie. Grate cacao on top of your cappuccino or cocktail. If you're a bit more adventurous make your own chocolate!

Cacao is very nutritious, nibble some while traveling or at a party. It gives you energy and connects to positive vibes. You can also make deliciously healthy energy balls.

Avoid using cow milk, it blocks the active substances from cacao. Use coconut or almond instead if you want to make a 'chocolate milk'.
